Track 9 : Reels
Corney is Coming, An Bhean Tincéara, The Collier's Reel
Although equally suited to the fiddle, Corney Is Coming is considered a piping tune by many, due to its associations with the piping of both Tommy Reck and Willie Clancy. It is sometimes suggested that the 'Corney' of the title refers to Cornelius O'Brien: a landlord in the Liscannor area, known for the tower he had built on the Cliffs of Moher to entertain his guests and for the stories of him enforcing his 'droit du seigneur'. The column on his grave in St Bridget's Well Cemetery is still sometimes referred to as Cornelius O'Brien's last erection.
Paddy Hill recorded Willie Clancy in 1958, at the top of his form. One of the tunes Willie played for the tape is An Bhean Tincéara. Felix Doran sometimes used the name for Within a Mile of Dublin, which is a related tune.
The Collier's Reel is one of those tunes that I think of when put in a stressful situation like sitting in front of microphones with the pipes strapped on, the mind gone blank.
